Prepare To Party
Thank You!
We have been a little overwhelmed with customer response. A big thank-you for the support, well-wishes and notes of encouragement. It's nice to also hear positive feedback, as well as the more usual opposite. Thanks for taking the time.
Dancing not Drowning
Don't think we are now resting. There is much more to do. Over the next short while you should notice a raft of fine-tuning and lots more Ingredients and Nutritional Tables. We are really strong on food ingredients integrity and firmly believe we have a right to know what's in our food. Yes we are a traditional Gourmet Deli. However 'traditional' should not also be used as an excuse for traditional thinking! From the many comments of encouragement you seem to agree.
Deli Packs

Platters, Lunch Boxes, Weekenders, Cheese Boards, Hampers, Gift Packs. Whatever you call them. Whatever mix of deli goods you would like to include, and, regardless of the number of guests you are planning to host. We can help.
Whilst at this stage we have only published details of our Cheese Packs there is plenty more to follow. Watch this space for Gourmet Packs, Picnic Baskets and Quickies.
In the meantime we are very happy to assist with your party plans. Just drop us a line or call into our South Melbourne Market Deli.
Xmas Orders Now Being Taken

As we have done for many years, we are now taking orders for Xmas Hams, Turkey, Salmon, Fruit Tarts and Puddings. Avoid disappointment as there is usually a last minute panic. Full details will be online shortly.

Life After Footy
The footy's been played, the skis are returned to storage, and the kids are back at school. As we struggle to adjust to Eastern Daylight Savings one can be in no doubt that the Melbourne Spring Festival season is upon us....
Market Celebrations
Our Market Deli has been sparkling with Spring celebrations. We have seen Cooking Demonstrations, Magicians, Buskers, Holy Goat Tastings and Mini-Farms for the kids. Great in-store specials are available daily.
Melbourne Fine Food Show
The Melbourne Fine Food Show was a great opportunity to meet and grill some of our suppliers and to explore and discover a variety of new makers. Watch this space over the coming months as we roll out a handful of exciting new lines.
Italian Pizza Bases
Already in-store and very well received is a new range of traditional Italian Wood Fired Pizza Bases. Fantastic quality and flavor with a nice crusty base.
Milawa Mustards
A recent trip to Bright was the perfect opportunity to drop into our friends Anna and David Bienvenu at Milawa Mustards. Anna and David have been growing their own mustard seeds and herbs on their Milawa property since 1983. From these essentiasl ingrediants they hand make a specialty range of seeded mustards. The flavours are crisp and refreshing and the range extends across all heat preferences from mild to flaming hot. We are thrilled to offer a select range of these excellent Mustards.
Cunliffe & Waters
The creativity and imagination of this wonderful Yarra Valley maker never ceases to impress. New lines are Count Vasiliev's Russian Mustard and Apricot Mustard. Both are deliciously tart with the Count being firmly on the hotter side of hot!
Our staff vote with their feet (and tummies) daily. Morning tea is typically a nice fresh loaf with various toppings. Funny how this selection is usually dominated by various C&W jars. Firm favorites are, Caramelised Fig and Quince Jam, Tomato Kasoundi, Mandarin Marmalade, and Hand Cut Cumquat Marmalade. Tip: Drop by the Deli on any Market Day at around 8.30 to 9.00am and experience the feeding frenzy and try a little C&W for yourself.
La Parisienne
In addition to the exquisite Pate and Terrines, we are now ranging a traditional selection of La Parisienne hand made pies. These include French Goats Curd, Caramelised Onion, Mushroom, Duck, Rabbit, Venison, Escargot with Basil, and Fresh Salmon Tarte. Best described as 'spectacular'!
Holy Goat Weekend
Holy Goat comes to Market
Whilst much of Melbourne and Geelong are consumed in Grand Final activity we are preparing our first ever Holy Goat tasting.
Come and try one of the most awarded and highly regarded ranges of artisan farmhouse cheese. This Saturday September 27th starting at around 10am.
A great opportunity to see what all the fuss is about and to discover why so many cheese lovers are turning to Goats Milk Cheese. Low in fat, great taste and suitable for lactose intolerant cheese lovers.
Our Cunliffe Waters tasting last weekend was a taste-fest. Thanks Narelle for manning the front line with your good humor and vast product knowledge. Anyone wishing to try any of the extensive Cunlliffe Waters range should just come into the shop. Chances are we have sampling jars ready for your appraisal.
Thanks also to the Mary's Team for hosting a very popular Mary's Gone Crackers day. Amongst the plethora of crackers now available, Mary's really deliver. Taste, texture, ingredients, and value all stack up.

Spring Flush
Spring Pigs Can Fly!
No, not a porker. This is a true story. Pricing for our award winning Boks cured bacon has gone down. Apparently a new distributor has managed to deliver sharper pricing. Excellent news for lovers of fine bacon.
Our Fave Spring Recipe
This month's Fave Recipe is courtesy of Flip Shelton (pictured below) and utilises her wonderful 5 Grain Porridge.
I thought porridge was a bit old world and ho-hum until I followed
Flip's instructions. What a sensational breakfast! Here tis.
Add 1 cup of Flip's Five Grain Porridge to a bowl. Add honey, sultanas,
prunes, banana, kiwi-fruit, a pinch of nutmeg, a handful of mixed nuts
and whatever else you like. Pour over this a cup of boiling water.
Cover with cling wrap and allow to cook for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove
wrap and stir thru a little soy or low-fat milk. Enjoy the best
re-charge breakfast we have had for some time.

Holy Goat Batman!
Perhaps you have heard of Holy Goat? They are a specialist farmhouse organic goat cheese maker. Yes, that's a mouthfull, but with such exquisite flavour. The great news is that Holy Goat is coming to Pickadeli. Their tasting debut is scheduled for Saturday September 27'th. Pencil this in as a special opportunity to learn and taste all about this extraordinary cheese range. As featured on the recent ABC television series, "Love's Harvest".
What's New?
A lovely Chestnut Jam farm fresh from Jim Jam's home orchards. If you are like me and adore the subtle flavours of Chestnut, then this is a must. Use it on scones or fruit toast, or as a luscious filling for desserts.
Fave Recipe
Poached Asparagus
Beautiful fresh crisp asparagus is available right now. This recipe suits either baby asparagus or mature asparagus and makes a lovely light starter or stand alone vegetable dish.
Chop a clove of pink garlic and lightly fry in a heavy based pan with a little olive oil and butter.
Meanwhile, snap asparagus stalks a little up from the base and rinse. Reduce flame to 50% and add asparagus to garlic.
Add a tablespoon of honey and a little seasoning, turning asparagus gently.
Scoop out and disgard the flesh from a Preserved Lemon wedge and rinse rind under water. Chop rind and add to asparagus. Also squeeze the juice of half a lemon onto mixture.

Increse heat to reduce fluids to a molten glaze whilst turning asparagus. Cooking should only take a few minutes. Serve whilst still a little firm with some freshly ground black pepper.
